I like to use analogies to simplify business as much as I can whilst educating and informing. My job is to make it as easy as possible so that you can create a profitable business that works without you needing to be there.

Eat The Frog is an analogy used to motivate productivity and prioritisation. How many times have you put off a big task, choosing to focus on the smaller, easier and less intimidating jobs? Procrastination is a human reaction, but it hinders growth both within a business and on a personal level.

So, why do we put off certain tasks? Perhaps they seem…

  • Challenging
  • Intimidating
  • Complex
  • Time-consuming
  • Boring
  • Embarrassing

Whether it’s posting on your social media sites or making a tough phone call to chase a late payment, the ‘hardest’ tasks are disregarded in favour of the more fun, less challenging tasks. However, the larger task still remains and has to be completed at some point…putting it off causes more anxiety, stress and worry as it lingers in the back of your mind.

Call it psychology or human nature but we can be pros at procrastination, and the only way to quit this habit is to ‘bite the bullet’, ‘just do it’ or…. eat the frog!

Make it as easy as possible for yourself to complete even the most daunting of tasks by starting each day in the right, most productive way:

  1. Every morning, create a clear to-do list. List everything that you want to achieve before the end of the day.
  2. Prioritise! Go through your list and prioritise each task; rewrite your list with the most important (and probably most daunting) task at the top, and the least important at the bottom.
  3. Assess the first – most important – item on your to-do list and spend 5 minutes planning how to best complete the task. This is the first step to getting it done.
  4. Once you have given it some thought, it’s time to eat the frog and just do it. If you struggle to make the first move, remind yourself of how relieved, stress-free and proud you’ll feel when it is done.

This is a habit and a skill that will become easier with time, and it will take some self-motivation and proactivity. Once you see the clear benefits that come from getting the more difficult tasks completed first it will become a normal part of your routine.
